Discourse analysis resource!

I have found a really great resource on discourse analysis! Stef Slembrouck from Ghent University presents and compares the major schools within discourse analysis in this neatly compiled overview.

One thing that I’m starting to realize is that the conversation analysis approach might be too narrow for me, since there seems to be too little focus on social and cultural context but instead only the context of the text itself is seen as crucial. From this perspective, the interactional sociolinguistic approach seems more suitable, especially if one brings in the work of Erwing Goffman under this umbrella. Nevertheless, I quite like some of the ideas of conversation analysis, as for instance the notion of sequential implicativeness

Mobile language learning

Here’s yet another announcement: Next Thursday at 5pm CET there will be an online gathering in a Yahoo! Messenger for language educators interested in ICT pedagogy (arranged by the ITAS network). This time the topic of discussion will be “Mobile Technology in Language Education”, and Agnes Kukulska-Hulme from the Open University will be joining us to share her expertise in the area. There will be a test this afternoon at 5 as well. Anyone who might be interested in participating can contact me!

I’ve tried to find some good reading suggestions on the topic, and this article by Bryan Alexander looks very interesting. Agnes suggested this editorial to the CALL Journal (July 2004, volym 17, nummer 3-4) by Jozef Colpaert, which also looks good, and gives some suggestions for further research. However, both of these texts are quite general, and I would really like to find something with more specific examples of mobile technology in language learning, so if you have any suggestions, I would be very grateful!
