computer fighting back (successfully)

I had set aside Saturday (in Australia) to take care of whole range of work that I have not had time for yet on this tip, and I was also hoping to find some time Monday (in Japan). But Saturday morning my laptop decided that it did not want to do this anymore. I have probably overworked it. Now it is simply dead. It starts the bios check process but stops halfway and complains about time of day not being available or something, and I have had a bunch of other error messages as well. This definitely seems to be hardware related, and I will so call Dell when I get back. I have already replaced a screen on this fairly new laptop. Anyhow – yesterday (Saturday) I went on a long jog along the waterfront in St Kilda, Melbourne. Perfect. Sunny but with a cool breeze, and very pretty. After that I spent three hours on the public computer in the hotel and got some work down.  Actually, I did go to a restuarant in beween and had a nice meal, a few drinks, and talked to people about the ongoing election (which of course have been a topic over the last couple of days there).

I had a productive and good stay in Melbourne, and I am happy about new and old contacts, and new perspectives. I also now have a sense how to finish that cyberinfrastructure article. But this coming week will be a challenge without a laptop and with quite a few commitment I amy not be able to manage. I am glad that I sent off an EU deliverable just before the computer died however…
