wireless internet

My first encounter with wireless internet was in 1996 when I arrived in Berkeley on the US west coast. It was one of the first days and we were getting organized in our residential hall. There were tables and people selling/displaying various things there and one guy demonstrated the Ricochet Wireless Modem. Being interested in [...]

interesting day at UC Irvine

I had an excellent day today which started off with a conference call. I spent the rest of the day at UC Irvine where I was hosted by the UC Humanities Research Institute.

I met with a range of fascinating people: David Goldberg, Kevin Franklin, Celia Pearce and Simon Penny.

I also got to have a [...]

kind of pricey

I did a bit of jogging on Balboa Island this afternoon. Nice setting. I am quite sure I passed this property. A pity it is somewhat pricey…
Tomorrow I will meet with people at UC Irvine. Should be great fun. I am also looking forward to having a look at Calit2 buildings etc.
I thought I [...]

heavy rain

Driving south today I encountered some *really* heavy rain. It was quite scary actually – especially going downhill on I5 towards LA in the dark with streams of water on the ground, continous heavy rain, road construction area and trucks splashing massive amounts of water. People were driving with emergency lights on. Just before getting [...]

moving on

In a bit I will leave Berkeley to vist some people south. Eventually I plan to end up at UC Irvine where I will meet some really interesting people. It is spring break week here but quite a few people seem to be about. For some reason I alwyas find myself ending up in the [...]

random meeting

Yesterday I had a random meeting with a game-performance person based in Berkeley. It was not really random but someone had mentioned this person’s name in an email some while ago and when I reread it (for finding out about travel details) I found this reference/name. I emailed this person in the morning and it [...]

book coming along

Canada

And yes, I should go to Canada next time I go to North America. I have several stops in mind…
McMaster University, University of Victoria (maybe), Simon Fraser University, The Banff Centre… Suggestions welcome!

smart guns

I heard this news item on “smart guns” being developed where the user of the gun would be identified through the technology (90% correctly so apparently). Well, what I found interesting was when the reporter eagerly said that you could actually have a hundred different people use this gun and the system would manage. Well, [...]

bookshop

Instead of jogging today (I have a cold) I went to a Borders Bookshop. They are often accused of being very popular and homogenous but I have found that they actually vary and most importantly, I find books there.
Many American bookshops (esp. chain ones) have been designed to allow for reading and relaxing. In [...]
