Waag

I am in Amsterdam now and I am quite taken with the Waag monument and the sense of energy I feel here. I am happy to be here. And I cannot complain about the accomodation – nor the view.

This is a photo of the Waag monument from my window:

Now it is time to meet an [...]

finally a few minutes of rest

A drink and a little bit of time for thinking and emailing. I wonder whether my need to go away and travel is a result of having too much to do (and after all – there is peace to being in transit) or whether it is more basic than that. I have never seen myself [...]

computer-enhanced presentations

When Howard Rheingold was here the other week he did not use any kind of visual material for his presentation. He just talked. As a kind of compensatory measure we broadcast the seminar on screens in the lab during the seminar. There were quite a few people in the lab and it actually helps.

When I [...]

acrobat temp files and talks

This morning I had to remove about 65,000 temp files from Adobe Acrobat that have caused every pdf-related activity not to work on my deskop computer. Although a nuisance it was nice to be able to solve the problem (I got some help here). I have also switched to Firefox on that computer. It has [...]

realistic representation

“In Defense of Retro Gaming: A Discussion of Abstraction” by Buck Feris (Armchair Arcade) is an interestic article on abstraction in relation to computer games. I am working on an abstract for an article on a somewhat similiar topic (roughly) right now. My recent ALLC/ALC presentation is also relevant to this topic.

next project

Although I do not really have any time for extra things I find myself getting involved in my next big writing project (after the language learning and technology book that I have not quite finished yet). These projects are very important to me and without them I would probably not manage. Reading for the new [...]

final book chapter

Today I finished the first full version of the final chapter of my IT and language learning book. I still have to write the conclusion and do substantial amounts of revision/additions but I am definitely getting there.

bloggforum Stockholm 2004

Today (probably right now) a Swedish forum (with mainly panel debates) is taking place in Stockholm: Bloggforum Stockholm 2004. HUMlab is represented through Stephanie Hendrick. This seems to be a really interesting event and I think it is important that blogs are discussed from a Swedish perspective and in a Swedish context.
Blogs are often [...]

geoweb and such things

A couple of TheFeature articles on mobile technology, location-awareness and annotation by Howard Rheingold:
The Geoweb and Deep Place
Will Location Blogging Take Off?
Annotating the Planet, Microsoft Style
Here is another somehwat related article: “Earth as a Lens: Global Collaboration, GeoCommunication, and the Birth of EcoSentience” by Bonnie DeVarco (Planetwork Journal).

information strategy

After having heard Howard Rheingold talking about information gathering I have realized what I do not have: an overall strategy for managing my information situation. This is something I need to work on.
I have most of the vital information in the form of ingoing and outgoing email (a total of about 90,000 messages). With the [...]
